A landscape worker was injured Saturday, July 8 when a car hit the trailer he was standing on.

The accident happened just after 1:15 p.m. on Branch Street. Mansfield Public Safety Dispatch received several E911 calls reporting a serious crash.

Responding officers and firefighters located the crash and one injured man in front of a house at 69 Branch St. Firefighters treated the man and transported him from the scene to Rhode Island Hospital.

Preliminary investigation determined a landscape crew had parked a truck and trailer on the shoulder of the southbound lane in front of 69 Branch St., police said. The crew had a reflective cone placed in the roadway behind the trailer.

A red Toyota Camry sedan was travelling southbound on Branch Street and for unknown reason, drove through the cone and straight into the landscape trailer causing the trailer to detach from the truck and sending the truck 35 feet down the roadway, police said.

A worker, standing on the trailer retrieving a lawnmower, suffered potentially serious injuries, according to police. The 71-year-old Mansfield woman operating the Toyota Camry was uninjured in the crash, police said.

Workers need extra protection during the landscaping season.
