When working with or near forklifts, safety must always be the #1 priority.
A 57-year-old worker at a plastic bag manufacturing plant in Lancaster city was seriously injured in an accident there Sunday afternoon.
The employee at Lancaster Extrusion, 211 Hazel St., was working in the building when the forks from a forklift came down across his back and pinned him against a piece of machinery, crushing his chest, according to city fire Capt. Ken Barton.
A city firefighter with experience operating forklifts was able to lift the forks off the man. The worker was unconscious when transported to Lancaster General Hospital.
If you work with, or near, forklifts, you need to make sure you take all the necessary precautions to avoid injury. However, it is also the employer's responsibility to ensure that all the necessary precautions are in place to ensure a worker's safety.
If you have been hurt on the job, whether it be due to a forklift or not, you need to understand your rights and the types of compensation that are available to you.
